The exactly
history of deviled eggs is lost to history. There is some
evidence that a predecessor to the common Deviled Egg can
be found in ancient Rome. They dined on hard-boiled eggs
seasoned with spices.
Where
did the term “deviled egg” originate?
Sometime around
1868, the William Underwood Company created “deviled ham”
and the term “deviled” referring to their seasoning
processes was trademarked in 1870. To this day it is the
oldest food trademark still in use in the
USA.
